About George - MI | |
|
|
George is located in Michigan.
After going through a rough patch earlier this year, involving recovery from an injury, George is now ready to take on the world again. Full disclosure: George has always been ready, it's just the world wasn't always ready for what George has to offer.
So here it is. George 100% delivers on all promises involved with owning a Mal. He is smart as a whip, quicker than greased lightning, extremely high energy, and he will keep you on your toes at all times. He loves playing with toys, balls, and sticks. In absence of a suitable stick he'll find himself a tree to extract said stick from. He does have a (tiny) off switch and will snuggle up to you on the couch during the evening. George is also the master of the side-eye as you can see in his pictures, and you'll be getting this look a lot while he is figuring out new ways to outsmart you. George does well with other dogs as long as they are more dominant than he is and correct him when he needs it. He will be pushy with submissive dogs. George also needs consistent exposure to activity and especially strange people, in quiet surroundings he has a tendency to "entrench" himself and develop reactivity to changes in his environment (this includes new people). As long as he is consistently exposed to activity and people he does fine.
As mentioned above, George did suffer an injury to his femur earlier this year. At this time it was also discovered that he has moderate hip dysplasia in his left hip (the same side as the injury). At the time of the discovery he was already past the cutoff (12 mos) for TPO surgery. Due to this, George will not be a candidate for high-speed or high-impact sports such as agility or dock diving. But he will probably excel at for example, nosework or barn hunt. He may or may not need surgery on this hip later in life, but for now he is managed on daily Cosequin and doing well. X-rays are available.
George is fairly big-boned and weighs an estimated 70 lbs.
For George, we are looking for an experienced handler (no exceptions!). This is not a dog for a first-time Malinois owner, or even someone who has maybe owned a lower key Mal but does not have experience managing high-drive, high-energy Mals. This has been tried and it has not worked.
Secondly, we are looking for someone who understands George's physical limitations and can put him to work in a discipline that accommodates those. More than physical exercise, George will need mental stimulation and continued socialization/exposure.
Third, homes with other dogs in the household who will be a match for George are preferred. George does best in a stable pack where he knows his place. And finally, we would strongly prefer for George to stay close to mid-Michigan so we will be giving preference to applicants located in the midwest.

Special Needs: Moderate hip dysplasia left hip, healed fracture left femur. Reactive to strangers, needs experienced handler.
