Are you ready for squeaks? Cuddles? An active sport partner? A travel companion?
Kenai (kee-nI) is a 3.5 year old Malinois that was surrendered by his owner due to changed circumstances in the home and a CCL injury that required surgery.
Since being in rescue, he has had CCL surgery to repair the injury and been neutered. He recovered like a true champ with the TLC his medical foster provided !
Kenai's education and favorite pastimes include:
"Sit" or "sitz" for him to sit.
"Plots" for him to lie down (working on learning English).
He will stay, drop it, and wait before he will eat his food.
"Go home" for going to the door and sitting down to wait for the door to be opened from the fenced yard. Once in, he will go straight to his crate and sit.
"Yes" is his go command.
"Check" is his search command when open air location for his rubber chicken.
His rubber chicken's name is Baby, so you can tell him to get Baby, and he will go get it - that is if he doesn't already have it in his mouth. BABY IS LIFE! His ideal forever home will have an endless back-up supply of Baby.
He walks well on leash (after a reminder) and is muzzle trained, so he is ready for vet visits.
He is house trained.
He will stay close to his crate if he can’t see his person.
He loves his home (his crate), but even more, he loves snuggling with his person and Baby simultaneously. Kenai is a true Velcro dog. Storms really don’t bother him, fireworks didn’t really phase him either. But, gun shots will make him talk.
Kenai has lived with a small dog, but his medical fosters have taken several months to introduce the two and always supervise. Kenai's current foster mom is working on introductions to other dogs his size, but she is taking it slow as he unsure thus far of like-sized creatures.
Kenai LOVES car rides almost as much as baby, but he will need to be tethered or crated in the back. Otherwise, expect to find him riding shotgun. Again, his person and Baby are life, so he will not allow a lot of space between you! While he shows no food aggression, he will try to share the food on your plate or counter surf, so we continue to work on these manners. For now, crating or requiring a down stay will protect the human food with supervision.
Bath time is no issue because Kenai LOVES water. This boy just loves life! You can brush teeth, bathe him, and clean his ears with no issue. He does need for mom to have a partner for nail trimming, or he will become a bit mouthy. When there is an extra human to distract him with peanut butter treats during the nail trim, he does really well.
He may react in his kennel if he hears new voices in the home, and he can not see the person. Once he sees the new person and knows they are accepted by his family, he settles quickly. But, he NEEDS to know it is okay or he exhibits destructive behaviors. Otherwise, he is respectful of the bedding in his crate. He does well with new people as long as proper introductions are made.
Kenai will need an active family who will continue his training and keep his mind engaged. While he has excellent basic training, Kenai is the type of dog who NEEDS BOUNDARIES. If you are a person ready for snuggles while setting boundaries and keeping his mind and body engaged, Kenai is the dog for you! Kenai will not be placed with young children and is not a good "first Malinois." He is a dog for a more experienced home who never again wants to use the bathroom alone!
ABMR thanks you for taking the time to look at our malinois available for adoption.
