PIPER ❤️ ~ 2 Year Old Malinois in Northern Virginia Piper is truly a great advocate for the breed and would be a fantastic introductory Malinois for someone active. She has been well trained and quickly adapts to new environments. Piper was found with another female Malinois as a stray and while her background is unknown, it is clear she has had a lot of training. If my life allowed, I would have adopted her the first week I brought her home- she is LOVELY. Piper has a high drive but once she has been exercised she is just fine lounging around. She still has a bit of puppy in her so chuck-it fetch or another similar daily energy burn is required. Piper is happy going on long walks, but after a few days of this she will get a bit restless. Piper is off leash trained and has fantastic recall. This comes in handy with chuck-it in fields!!! She should NOT be exercised in (or around) dog parks as she has reacted poorly when we have passed by them. She has not paid attention to cats on the street or the shelter where she was first at- unknown in the house. Behavior around children is also unknown, but she seems to like them from a distance! She doesn’t realize how big she is so I would not recommend a home with children (or frequent guests) younger than 7. What you’ll get from Piper: ⁃ A household comedian that works for food ⁃ A cuddler - She is a semi-velcro dog, but can be left home alone outside of the crate for several hours (if she is exercised properly before!) ⁃ An errand/adventure partner - She will hop in the car and just be happy to be with you. ⁃ A personal trainer - She will keep you healthy and active, but not as much as other Mals do. ⁃ A crate/muzzle trained dog. She doesn’t mind nail trimmings or baths. ⁃ One of the quietest dogs ever. She rarely barks. ⁃ A dog that has done well in any new environment (so long as there are no balls!!!!) ⁃ She could be a candidate for agility or dock diving. She likes the water! We are working on a few things: ⁃ Heeling on the leash- she pulls a lot until after she has been exercised. ⁃ Comfort around new people. She does not like when people get their face close to hers (who does?!) at first introduction. ⁃ The dopamine rush she gets around balls- especially when she sees kids or other dogs playing with them. ⁃ Playing with other dogs, she is a bit rough and needs to learn how to share toys. She has had introductions with a few other dogs and she’s been fine. She does get a little spicy on the leash from time to time, but generally ignores other dogs/people. Piper would benefit from an owner who knows how to properly socialize/introduce dog reactive dogs to prevent her grouchiness from increasingly. Ideal owner would be someone who is active and  either works partially from home or can spend a MINIMUM of 20 min both day and night playing chuck it fetch. Someone sho doesn’t mind her cuddling with them on the sofa and is willing to take her on adventures or spend quality time together outside of working hours. Ideally, Piper would love to have another pup friend for her or a family-type environment.  If this sounds like the girl for you, contact Maryfrances, Piper's Coordinator or fill out her application here.
