Timber's start to life wasn't the easiest. He was picked up as an underweight stray with a chewed off rope hanging from his collar, fly damage to both ear tips, and a heartworms. It was immediately obvious upon moving into a foster home that he had never been a pet inside a house before. Everything was new! He didn't know how to walk on floors, was very unsure about being touched anywhere past his head, and experienced each part of his new life like a 70lb puppy - microwave beeps, refrigerator doors, humans brushing teeth - all completely new and fascinating. Timber is finishing up his heartworm treatment and is ready to find a forever home that is prepared to continue training to help him reach his potential. Timber has been wonderful with male and female dogs ranging from 33-55lbs, and would love to have another dog in the home. He is house trained, crate trained, rides well in the car (although he prefers to sit backwards and look out the rear windshield), and has done great at all of his vet visits. Toys are life, and his favorites are hard rubber toys like the black kongs or benebones, but he needs to be monitored with toys as he will swallow pieces that he can chew off. He has shown serious interest in playing tug. He is learning that being petted is pretty awesome. His foster taught him that he needs to sit and be calm if he wants pats, and he will slide into a polite sit in front of her to stop her when she's walking around the house when he wants pats. He has come a long way in the past three months, but has been on activity restriction the entire time due to heartworm treatment, so he knows how to sit, down, drop it, and paw, but is still working on heel and activities associated with exercise. He has very good recall in the yard, but has not been able to do any off-leash training. Timber learns quickly and will do anything for a toy. His favorite thing to do is chew his toys with the three resident dogs and the two humans in his foster home. Timber cannot go to a home with cats, and should not be placed with kids under 14 due to his strength and speed and that he is still learning boundaries. He has ignored chickens enclosed in a fence. This boy is all legs, and a 6ft fence will help keep him safe. He showed interest in chasing cars when he first moved into foster, but is improving greatly with training. Timber needs a person with breed experience who can dedicate time to continuing his training, exposing him to life beyond a rope in a backyard, and making sure he gets enough exercise. This dog will be a gem after he gets some polishing.
